Faith in stone

Synagogues & the Museum

The town once counted more than a dozen synagogues. Its grandest still stands — and beside the prayer houses, a museum now tells the whole story.

01

The Six-Dome Synagogue

Built in 1888, the Six-Dome Synagogue (Altı Günbəz) is the architectural jewel of the town — a dignified sandstone building crowned with six cupolas, its hall lit by tall arched windows. Lovingly restored, it remains the spiritual centre of Krasnaya Sloboda.

02

A town of prayer houses

In its golden age the town held many synagogues serving its quarters and trades — among them the Gilaki and the Karchogi (Round) synagogues. Several have been restored; others live on in memory and in the museum.

03

The Museum of Mountain Jews

Opened in 2020 in a beautifully restored 19th-century synagogue, the Museum of Mountain Jews is the first of its kind in Azerbaijan. Its collection traces the history, faith, language and daily life of the Juhuro — a fitting guardian of the town's memory.
